Budapest taxis

Budapest taxis

The central Budapest downtown is much smaller and easier to get around by taxi than many other capital cities, like London and Paris. This means that Budapest taxis are not necessarily expensive, in fact if there are 3 or 4 of you traveling it may be cheaper than buying public transport tickets. Also not speaking Hungarian doesn’t have to stop you ordering a taxi as several companies provide English speaking telephonists or online ordering in advance of your trip.

In Budapest you should book taxis, not hail them on the street. If you hail taxis you could end up with unlicensed taxis who will rip you off at the best, or you will pay a premium rate if you do get a licensed taxi that will take you. Never get in an unmarked taxi as it is likely to be unlicensed. Look for a company logo on the outside. Most restaurants will phone a taxi for you if you ask nicely, otherwise call or order online.

The taxi companies I would recommend are (with English language websites):

City Taxi – Well priced and reliable. They have English speaking telephonists and you can order online. (+36 1) 211 1111

Click here for City Taxi the website.

Click here to see the online taxi order form.

Taxi 2000 – Well priced and reliable. Most of their telephonists will speak English and you can order online. (+36 1) 200 0000

Zóna Taxi – As I mentioned in my post about Budapest Ferihegy airport, Zóna Taxi are the sole company that waits in the taxi ranks at the airport. They are also available in Budapest and are reasonably priced, have English speaking telephonists and you can order by email (in advance).

I have not used these companies, but know people who do and recommend them which also have English language versions of their site:
