A Budapest bus

Buses and trolley buses are another easy way to get around beautiful Budapest. There are over 150 bus routes and 15 trolley bus routes criss-crossing Budapest and taking you to every nook and cranny of the city. The buses are blue and the trolley buses are red (see the pictures).

You have to buy your ticket in advance and validate it on board at the start of your journey with either a red punch-machine or an orange automated machine depending on the age of the the bus or trolley. They run from around 4.30 am until around 23.30 pm but it is best to check the timetables at the stops or online before.

To determine the best route for you using public transport, use the BKV’s website,  (only in Hungarian) or this Budapest public transport route-planning site (English is available here). These both work best when you have the exact addresses for your proposed journey’s beginning and end.

One bus that may be of specific interest to visitors of Budapest is the 16A or 116 which runs from Moscow Square (Moszkva tér) metro station up the hill to the Castle District (Budai Vár) where you can find the Royal Palace (Budavári Palota), Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya), the Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria), the Turul statue, Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) and much, much more. Moscow square is easy to get to by metro on the red line; tram on the 4 0r 6 line and several bus lines. From here you can enjoy a 10 minute stroll up the hill to the Castle District or jump on the 16A or 116 bus from the top of the steps across the forecourt of the metro station.
